Natal Parade Crashes After Stairs Collapse During Carnival Parade

At least 29 people were injured and nine missing after the stairs leading to a public staircase collapsed on the Sambadrome on Friday in the northern Brazilian city of Natal during a parade celebrating Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, reports said. The city said 32 were affected, including nine missing, though it was not clear whether the missing people were among the injured or had just fallen off the staircase.

Witnesses said the stairs gave way during the parade as a performer was hoisting a crowd of dancers to the public staircase leading to the finish line. Some participants fell onto the road below but were then carried off on stretchers by rescue crews. Others fell on the ground and were not helped by first responders.

One of the attendees of the parade told local news outlet Lance that the step collapse “totally shocked” him. “It was the worst accident we have ever seen. People in the parade said there were people screaming,” the attendee said.

A spokesperson for the fire brigade confirmed at least seven people were injured and said the identity of those involved were still being determined.

The city said the cause of the collapse is being investigated.
